Planning On Using Composite Decking? Here’s What You Need to Know

When you are planning your deck one thing that you need to consider is what material are you going to use to build it. Years ago most people used cedar, which is still a good choice, but there are other materials you should consider for your new deck.

When we we built our deck a few years ago we looked at a lot of materials including composite decking and a very hard wood called Ipe.

One thing that we did that was a lot of fun an educational is to visit a few different deck supply stores and check out the materials they carry. If you have a contractor building your deck, you can visit their suppliers. We were able to get small samples of the composite material hat we could take home and see how the colors matched our house.

It is also good if you can find a store that has the wood on display. We found one place that built small decks outside with the different material and you we could see how the material was aging.

If you are thinking of using composite decking, here’s good information from TAMKO.

(BPT) – Have you ever considered composite decking but disregarded the idea because you felt like you didn’t know enough about it? Maybe you’ve wondered how composite decking is made? Or what kinds of materials make up composite decking?

Although composite decking is not new, lack of familiarity with the product may lead you to be confused when making a decision about the type of product you should choose for your deck. To make this decision-making process easier, it often helps to go back to the basics.

So what is composite decking anyway? By definition, composite decking is a wood-like product that is created by the mixture of wood fibers, or sawdust, and virgin and recycled plastics. The combination of these elements along with color pigments and other protective additives, form a traditional wood-like decking profile that requires less maintenance than traditional wood decks.

Many composite decking products are manufactured through a process called extrusion. This is defined as a forming process in which melted plastic and wood materials are forced through an opening to produce a product that maintains a relatively consistent size and shape. Think of it like putty that is being pushed through a mold. The opening gives the board the shape and texture.

Another manufacturing method is compression molding. Combined molten materials for the composite wood are placed on to wood grain molds which are then compressed under tremendous heat and pressure to create a physical bond. The force applied helps to squeeze out air pockets and create a compressed board.

For outdoor living, composite decking provides many added benefits including weather resistance, complementary colors, durability and reduced maintenance.-

* Weather resistance: The density of a composite decking board helps protect the board from rot and decay caused by prolonged exposure to moisture. By keeping moisture out, this helps reduce mildew, insects and bacteria.

* Complementary colors: The composite boards are also manufactured in a range of colors to perfectly complement any home. Instead of needing stain or paint, the colors are already added to the boards.

* Durability: Composite decking boards are manufactured to be stain resistant against certain common food and beverage stains, including mustard, ketchup, barbecue sauce, canola oil, fruit punch, wines and coffee. This stain resistance will preserve the life and beauty of the deck.

* Maintenance: Composite decking does not require paint, stain or a sealer reducing the overall maintenance of the deck. The best way to maintain a composite deck is to keep it swept, hose it off at least twice a year and attend to stains promptly with household cleaners or commercially available composite deck cleaners.

Overall, composite decking is a low maintenance product that has become a desirable alternative for outdoor living. Some composite deck products, like TAMKO’s Envision, even add an extra layer of protection against weather, staining and scratching to preserve the natural beauty of the composite decking board.

TAMKO’s Envision is uniquely designed with an added outer layer that is physically bonded to the core board under a compression process. This bonded outer layer adds durability to the core materials that provide the strength and consistency of the board. Envision also comes in four true, multi-shaded color options, designed with color highlights that emulate the textures and natural color variations of real wood to further enhance the natural beauty of the deck. Knowing more about the choices available helps you make a more informed decision about the product that is best for you. Composite decking shouldn’t be something you avoid because you don’t know anything about it. Composite decking has come a long way since it was first introduced and can provide you with the beauty and satisfaction you look for in a deck for years to come. You don’t want to miss out.

How To Truly Make Your Patio An Extension Of Your Home

A few years ago we built a new second story deck on our house. It was a lot bigger than our existing deck and we sealed the deck so we could also use the space under our deck.

This provided two new areas to enjoy our home especially during the spring, summer and fall. The lower deck gets used more in the winter and the rain days because I can use it for barbecuing. At some point we will install a hot tub and I’m sure we will use it a lot more.

(BPT) – If you’re like many homeowners, you consider the patio an extension of your home. So it’s fair to ask: Would you be just as comfortable nestled in with your favorite book or preparing a meal in your outdoor space as you would in your living room or your kitchen? As you contemplate ways to improve your outdoor area, think about projects that can both extend the hours you spend outside and make the time you spend there more relaxing.

Just as technology continues to make life indoors easier, more sophisticated awning systems, heating options and lighting can make your outdoor space that much more pleasant. Here are a few areas to consider as you plot your next round of improvements for your outdoor living space:

* Temperature control: One of the best ways to make your patio pleasant for more of the day – and more of the year – is to add simple temperature control features. If you live in a place where it gets uncomfortably hot during the summer, install misters around your favorite sitting areas to cool things down. Likewise, if you often find yourself heading inside because it gets too chilly in the spring and fall, a few strategically placed overhead heaters can extend your patio season.

* Shade matters: Awnings and umbrellas also play a huge role in regulating the temperature and comfort of your deck or patio. And now, shading options have become more sophisticated and easier to maintain than ever before. You’ll never have to worry about damaged awnings on a windy day with Somfy’s motorized awning systems and wind sensors that work together to automatically retract your awnings when winds become too high.-Retractable awning systems powered by Somfy can also be accessorized with sun sensors that signal motorized awnings to open as soon as the sun rises, keeping your outdoor space cool from the start of the day.- If adding a hint of warmth is needed, simply install an awning heater – All of these accessories can be managed by the same remote that controls your motorized awning. With a system like this, you can leave the days of fiddling with fussy patio umbrellas behind.

* An outdoor kitchen: No patio is complete without a grill, but do you find yourself making frequent trips inside for other prep work? Make outdoor cooking easier by adding a prep island that can be placed near your grill. And if you really want to go all out, look for options that feature outdoor sinks or small refrigerators hidden under the countertop.

* Entertainment connectivity: Well-placed speakers can bring the stereo sound of your indoor system out. By upgrading your system so it can be controlled from your wireless device, you can bring the conveniences of your digital music system outdoors and eliminate the need to get up to turn up the volume or flip to the next song.

* Take look at your lighting: High-powered outdoor lights on sensors might be helpful when you’re bringing in the groceries at night, but patio entertaining calls for a little more subtlety when it comes to lighting. Consider zero-energy solar-powered fixtures around the perimeter of your patio for a gentle ambiance to light up your evenings. Somfy’s motorized systems can also be connected to your lighting, allowing you to adjust brightness as needed from the comfort of your patio lounger.

Now is the perfect time to plan for next year’s patio season, and with the right improvements, you can make it the most comfortable one yet. For more ideas and products that can make your outdoor space that much more hospitable, visit www.somfysystems.com.

How To Use A Gas Powered Post Hole Digger (Video)

Holding the gas powered post hole digger we rented for the afternoon.

Holding the gas powered post hole digger we rented for the afternoon.

A few years ago we had a big wind storm and it blew done a few panels of our old cedar fence. I purchased new cedar panels and 4×4 fence posts.

I used a clam shell post hole digger to dig the post holes. It worked fine, but I was happy that I only had to dig a few fence post holes.

If you are only digging a few holes, I can recommend using this tool. If you are digging more than that I recommend you get something with a bit of power.

Last summer I helped a friend build his deck and the project called for a lot of posts. I was really happy when he rented the gas powered post hole digger in the picture above. It took two of us to run it and we sweated a bit, but it was a lot quicker than using the clam shell tool. Using this powered version we were able to dig all of the post holes in an afternoon.

Here’s the video I created of how to use a post hole digger.

Here are the two tips in the video that I learned using the post hole digger in the afternoon:

The first thing I learned, is that you want to keep the auger clean of dirt and debris. We found that the best way to do this is to move the post digger up and down as it is running. This pulls the dirt out of the hole and it will automatically spread the dirt at the top of the hole.

The second thing I learned, is that if you are working in an area with large rocks, the auger may not have enough power or the space to remove them. In this case you need to stop the post hole digger, pull it out of the hole and remove rocks by hand or using a shovel.

If you have any questions or informationon digging post holes that you would like to share, please leave a comment below.
