Is Spring Here Yet?

The last week we had rain, snow, sleet and hail. Luckily not all at the same time :-)  But pretty close. A few days ago the clouds parted and the sun came out. It was still cold, but it was great to see the sun. I enjoyed it so much I even fired up the BBQ and cooked up a few hamburgers.

BBQ on the deckIt was great, but now we are back to rain, snow and clouds:-( It’s been really hard to get motivated about writing articles on decks and gardening, so I apologies for the lack of posts lately. To get back into the great outdoors I’ve been purchasing indoor plants to make my office bright and cheery. Here’s a picture of a few of the new purchases:

New house plantsThe crocus in front isn’t new, but I recently repotted it with proper bark mulch and a new pot that I purchased from Garden Works. I was lucky when I went into the store because they had a crocus seminar and I got excellent advice on what to do. When I took the plant out of the original pot most of the roots were looking pretty pretty sad. I clipped a few of the roots and to them back into Garden Works to see what they thought. They confirmed that the roots were dead. For the most part the only roots that were healthy were the exposed ones. So I ended up removing most of the roots.

After a few days of replanting the crocus it was looking much better. I found out that the key is to have the right pot and the right kind of bark mulch. This is because crocuses don’t require dirt since where they come from the roots attach to trees and they get there nutrients from the rain. That reminds me, if you do remove a lot of roots from the plant it is recommended that you spray the leaves with luke warm water until the roots have a chance to grow. I’ve been using the sprayer in the sink.
