Most lawn and garden equipment are susceptible to the elements, and as such, require proper storage. There are many forms of storage, but the most common is the garden shed.
Garden sheds can be bought in a variety of materials, including treated timber, metal and vinyl. You can also build them yourself, or have them built to your specific plans. Sheds have the advantage over other lawn and garden storage solutions, in that they are usually much larger, you can walk straight in, and they can be locked and alarmed if needed. They often come with racks or hooks on one or more walls for hanging tools, and some have shelves for storing items such as lawn seed and fertilizers. Many have guttering, or can have guttering added, which can feed a water butt, allowing you fresh water to feed your lawn and garden.
When building your own shed, or designing plans for one, you should make sure to include a solid, level surface, and a waterproof roof. A shed should be made as watertight as possible, to protect the tools it contains, and to stop items such as lawn seeds and fertilizers from becoming damp.
If you plan to use a lawn and garden shed, some things have to be taken into consideration. You will need space to place your shed, and this will need to be on a flat level surface. You will also need to consider security. If the shed is going to be visible from outside your garden, you may need to fit a lock and possibly an alarm. This will, of course, depend on the type of lawn and garden equipment you plan to store in your shed. Another possible storage solution is a lockable garden storage box, which come in a variety of sizes. For those who have few large tools, these make a better choice than a shed. These are usually tall boxes, with hinged, or sliding doors, with hooks or racks to hang tools on. These are not large enough, however, to store power tools such as lawn mowers.
When choosing a garden storage solution, be sure to look over the plans, to check that you will be able to accommodate all of your garden and lawn equipment.
In general, for a small garden, with no lawn, and few shrubs, a small lockable box would be sufficient. For larger gardens, with lawns that require mowing, and large amounts of shrubs that require regular trimming, a shed would be more suitable. The large equipment required to care for lawns and shrubs require a large amount of space, and as such, you should find a shed large enough to accommodate them.
