Building a pergola is a great DIY project for anyone with a few basic carpentry skills and a spare weekend. Pergolas are great shade covers for decks and patios, as well as dramatic garden features.
Selecting the right plan for building a pergola will depend on the specific purpose you have in mind. It’s worth taking a little time just imagining how the pergola is going to work withing your landscape design.

Create an attractive vertical flower garden
The plants you grow on your pergola will be on display where you can see them from all over the garden.
You can grow all kinds of flowering plants and vines on your pergola. Roses and wisteria are very popular, or you may prefer sweet pea, fragrant jasmine or honeysuckle, or even grape and passionfruit vines.
Keep in mind the size and weight of the plants as they mature when planning and building your pergola. Large, bushy plants like roses will require a solid, sturdy pergola to support them.
