There are a number of excellent free backyard shed plans around, and if you are looking for a bit of inspiration on how to design your shed, searching the internet for plans that other people have come up with might allow you to really understand your own plan better.
A good place to start in your quest for backyard shed plans is to start with a general shed plan. What is a general shed plan? This is a plan that is for your basic shed. The basic shed has a standard door on the front and one or two windows on the sides. It has a gabled roof because these are the easiest kind to build. A lot of pre-assembled or pre-cut kits use this style of shed. They are easy to build and they look great when finished. The first shed I built was this style and it is picture above.
Of course, garden sheds are very popular nowadays because of the fact that many people are getting into gardening as a hobby. That means that a shed like this one from real cedar might be a shed that you would look at to get ideas about specific garden tools and potting elements that you might want to include in your final shed design. This shed does a good job of generally covering what you would want in a garden shed and therefore if there is some important part missing from your design you can make sure that you catch it in the design linked to above.
Maybe you’re interested in a shed that can be multi-purpose and has partitions of some kind to specifically separate different functional areas of the shed? Then check out this design from Popular Mechanics.
Another good place to find shed plans is in books. It’s always fun to go to book stores and look through their outdoor structure building books. There are usually a few good shed plans in these books. If you are looking for an inexpensive option, go to a used book store or a book sale event. The nice thing about this is even the old plans are valid if you can find the design you want.
As you can see there is a good selection of free shed plans and blueprints on the Internet for a lot of different uses. The selection of plans above is a partial list and I’m sure there are more plans available on the Internet. You just need to do some searching. You can also purchase plans on the Internet. If you are interesting in purchasing plans you should look at this selection of garden shed plans.
The larger point here is that there are a lot of good ideas out there already for shed plans, and if you can not think of a good backyard shed plan on your own, then the next best thing is to look at what already works and then incorporate ideas from those working sheds into your own plan until you come up with a vision for what you want. Lack of inspiration should never be a roadblock to developing your backyard shed plans because there are already so many good ideas available for free that you can find through a simple internet search.
Do you have plans for or know where I can get plans for the shed that you have an image of (embedded to the left of the paragraph that reads “As you can see there is a good selection of free shed plans and blueprints on the Internet for a lot of different uses.”)?
Please help, I cannot find plans for such a shed.
Great article, thanks! I was looking into building a shed some time back and I found both the Black&Decker and the Popular Mechanics plans. I had since lost the bookmarks and was searching again and sure enough, you have both of them linked along with several other interesting designs.
Fantastic blog! I actually love how it is easy on my eyes and the information are well written. I am wondering how I could be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your rss feed which should do the trick! Have a nice day!
