Concrete Spacer Filling Up With Weeds?

If you have a concrete deck or driveway with a space between the sections you probably have weeds or grass growing in the space. This is a problem we had on our driveway and I finally fixed it yesterday. Here is what I’ve tried and what finally worked.

Last year I hunted around and got a small torch that is designed for burning weeds. You attach a small propane bottle and you can run around burning weeds. The theory is that you don’t need to incinerate the weeds, just burn the tops and that will kill the plant. And since there are dead roots in the space no new weeds will grow there.

In reality, the space look like burnt weeds for a few days and then it looked okay and then within a few weeks the weeds started growing back again.

Yesterday, I brought out the torch and started burning again but afer spending ten minutes I decided it was time to do it the old fashion way and remove the weeds. If you have never done this before it is not a fun job. The first time I removed the weeds and grass I used a screw driver and pulled the weeds out. This time I bought a special tool that is designed for this job…pictures to follow.

Once all of the weeds were removed, my trusty neighbour let me borrow his small hand sprayer. It has more strength than a garden hose nozzle, but less than a pressure washer. Using this sprayer I was able to clean all of the excess dirt and plants out of the space. My neighbour uses it every few months and he has no problems with weeds. I’m hooked and I’m going to buy one… or keep borrowing his.
